Julia Nicholson was born in the south of England in 1944. She studied at the Slade School 1962-7 gaining a six week landscape painting scholarship in 1964.
1969-70 She worked in a S.P.A.C.E studio in St Katherine's docks (old warehouses) and exhibited twice at the Royal Academy Diploma Galleries and also in a Grafton Street gallery and at the South London art gallery.
Most of the 70's were taken up with having 2 children and teaching and in 1980 the family moved to a small Aberdeenshire farm.
Serious painting began again in 1986 with living subject matter all around. The immediacy of the landscape, animals and the whole way of life became very important; including people when they were any.
In 1998 she became a gallery artist with Hanover Fine Art, Dundas Street, Edinburgh; exhibiting 3 or 4 times a year.
In 2003 she had a large exhibition in Holland for 6 weeks. There were also commissions including a double portrait and a family portrait.
In 2004 work was shown at the Milton gallery, Crathes; The Sylavethy gallery and for 10 days during the North East Open Studios at the Wyeness hall in Iuverurie.
2005 has began with the work shown at the Bridge View gallery in Aberdeen as well as the Milton gallery and in Edinburgh.
